Fenland
Once vast areas of impassable swamps, bogs and marshes covered most of the
region. The area was drained between the 17th and 19th centuries transforming
the wild wet wilderness into large panoramas of dark peat fields.
Remnants of these wetlands are now limited to a few sites such as Wicken
Fen, however new reserves are being reconstructed, providing wildlife
havens that will encourage species such as the Bittern back to the fens.
